Maurice Wade Biography

Maurice Wade was born on 31 March 1917 at Wolstanton, Newcastle under Lyme.

He trained in the 1930’s at the Burslem School of Art. During World War II he served in the Army from 1939 to 1946 after which he settled for a short time in London. He returned to the Potteries in 1951, and made his home in Longport, an area that would be the subject of many of his Paintings.

Maurice Wade taught Art at Churchfields School in Newcastle under Lyme in the 1960’s and in the 1970’s having left teaching he ran his own Gallery for a period.

An artist of some repute he was a Gold medallist and exhibitor Hors Concours, Societe des Artistes Francais and at his peak he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Paris Salon in 1962 and with The Royal Society of British Artists.

During the 1970’s Wade held One Man Shows at The Thackeray Gallery, London and The Tib Lane Gallery, Manchester.

Maurice Wade Legacy

Maurice Wade’s paintings are in a number of public collections, including the Government Art Collection. All of the Paintings that are in Public Collections can be found here

Today, Wade is very collectable and his paintings are highly regarded by art lovers, due to their technical brilliance. His paintings are striking representations of the landscape, painted with a palette knife using a limited colour palette.

However, it is Wade’s approach to his subject matter that sets his paintings side. They are industrial landscapes with no hint of sentimentality and devoid of nostalgia. It is estimated that during his life time he painted in the region of 300 of these striking Landscapes.

Influences upon Wade are there to see or at least be speculated upon. The stillness of  Vilhelm Hammershøi paintings is an obvious comparison as well as the stripped-back London landscapes of Algernon Newton.

As a collector of Modern British Art Maurice Wade amassed a high quality collection. This small, but wonderful collection surfaced in April 2019 with a number of very fine paintings and drawings selling strongly at Christies. Highlights of the sale were works by William Roberts and Wyndham Lewis.
