Bhatt, Akash RBA RWS (1972 – )
Akash Bhatt was born to Gujarati parents in Leicester who emigrated from Kenya in the 1960s. He is well know for his panoramas concentrating on the architecture of Florida, Cuba and the Caribbean and South America.
“Sketchbooks form the main part of my working process. In them I record ideas and imagery drawn from life. Together with this I keep detailed notebooks of writings—the combination of the two are the foundation of any work I produce.
I also draw and paint when out on the streets looking for research material. Together with the sketchbooks, I use large sheets of paper on which I draw from direct observation. Back in my studio this information is used in the planning and making of new paintings.
Quite often the compositions are finalised on location. This direct connection with the place is vital for me.
I enjoy using a variety of mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolour, mixed media, and pen and ink. Normally I have a series of works in progress. Some of the bigger pieces can take up to two years to reach completion”
