John Theodore Harrison was born on 30 August 1914 in Woking, Surrey, and was educated at Canford School. He was the only son of Thomas Dalkin Harrison, a Civil Servant, resident at Moreton, Chislehurst Road, Sidcup, Kent. John Harrison matriculated from Christ Church, Oxford on 10 November 1933 and gained a second class honours in Modern History in Trinity Term 1936. The degree of BA was conferred on 20 November 1937 and that of MA, which required no further residence or study in Oxford, in absence on 16th December 1950. He studied at l`Ecole de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and thereafter was then resident in North Africa (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) where he was active as an Artist. There is a record of an exhibition held by the artist in 1946 at an unspecified location (see Combat No 198 19.1.46) His works show a great vitality and freedom and are at times reminiscent of the works of Matthew Smith, Duncan Grant and Christopher Wood. Harrison has also been known to sign some of his works `Edmund Elada` evidently a nome-de-plume.
